Oil spills: a threat for groundwater Oils spills often cause serious contaminations within a short time. Excavation of the contaminated soil and groundwater wells can prevent further migration of the oil. Heating oil was spilt during the filling of an oil tank.   More than 1000 litres heating oil was spillt. This led to a heavy contamination of the groundwater. Remediation was undertaken using mobile oil treatment equipment and by skimming.
