Contamination of former Soviet Military Installation fuel baseA site of 200 above-ground storage tanks was contaminated with diesel fuel and lubricants. A volume of 50 m³ of subsurface soil and groundwater was contaminated by gasoline.
Technology: soil vapor extraction, groundwater pumping and air stripping
City: Vácmáriaudvar
Site Type: former Soviet Military base
Site Description:
The area covers 16 hectares. An area with about 200 above-ground fuel storage tanks was contaminated with diesel fuel and lubricating oil. In the vicinity of 60 underground tanks, 50 m³ of subsurface soil and groundwater was contaminated by gasoline.
Technology: on site bioremediation included bioaugmentation
Quantity remediated: soil (ex-situ) 3000 m³, soil (in-situ) 2,000 m³, soil (surface contaminated) 25,000 m³, groundwater 10,000 m³
Contaminants: Gasoline, diesel oil, lubrication oil
Client: Hungarian State
Project Manager: József Varga
Completed Project Information
Date of remediation: 1992-1993
Cleanup Goals:
Contaminant concentration before treatment:
excavated soil ranged from 5000 ppm to 20000 ppm, gasoline contaminated soil 1000-5000 ppm, surface contaminated lubricating oil 1000-5000 ppm, gasoline in groundwater 10-30 ppm.
Contaminant concentration after treatment:
diesel oil in soil <500 ppm, gasoline < 100 ppm, gasoline in groundwater <0.1 ppm>
